Shilajit Blood Pressure: What We Know (and Don’t Know)

Type “shilajit blood pressure” into Google and you’ll see mixed messages. Some say it lowers blood pressure; others warn it may be risky. The truth is more nuanced.

Does Shilajit Lower Blood Pressure?

Human data are limited and somewhat mixed:

  • A 2003 study gave 2 g/day of shilajit for 45 days and found no significant change in blood pressure, pulse or body weight in the participants. PMC

  • A 2023 open-label trial in elderly patients with hypertension found that 500 mg shilajit twice daily for 30 days, alongside standard antihypertensives, reduced oxidative stress and improved arterial function markers (like arterial stiffness and endothelial function). Blood pressure itself was not dramatically altered, but vascular health indicators improved. ijpp.com+1

Some popular articles summarise these and other findings by suggesting shilajit may have mild hypotensive (BP-lowering) effects, but comprehensive clinical proof is lacking. Cleveland Clinic+2Cymbiotika+2

Why Blood Pressure Could Be Affected

Possible mechanisms include:

  • Reduced oxidative stress in blood vessels

  • Improved endothelial function (how well arteries relax and contract)

  • Modulation of nitric oxide pathways and inflammation ScienceDirect+2Taylor & Francis Online+2

These pathways are all relevant to blood pressure control, but we still don’t have large, long-term trials specifically on hypertension.

Who Needs to Be Careful?

Because shilajit might nudge blood pressure down in some individuals, caution is especially important for:

  • People with already low blood pressure

  • Those taking multiple antihypertensive medications

  • Anyone with symptoms like dizziness, fainting or very variable BP readings

Leading hospital guidance notes that supplements with potential BP-lowering actions can be risky if added on top of existing medication without medical supervision. Cleveland Clinic+1

Disclaimer: Never adjust or replace your blood pressure medication with shilajit. Always talk to your GP or a cardiologist before combining shilajit with blood pressure drugs.
